Notes for Child: Frederick Herman BARTZNewspaper article from approximately 1958.
The railroad brought much business to the community. One of the pioneers to Mountain developed as an interesting and perhaps, a profitable enterprise. He was Fred Bartz who came here, indirectly, from Germany in 1886. When the railroad men moved in, Bartz roomed them and boarded them ($4.00 per month) in the old family home which still stands. He also kept cash on hand so he could cash the checks of the railroad men and the river hogs. For this service in the days when banks were distant, Fred would keep 10 percent of the checks he cashed. He housed and fed as many as 40 men--and cashed their checks.
One of his children, William Bartz, now 73 years old, still lives here.
"my father named the place Mountain," he said, but not for any special hill. It just looked kind of mountainous here and that's what he named it. Pa moved here from places he has at Gillett and Kelly Lake and he had eight children. Only my sister, Mrs. Oscar Strong, and I live here, but some of the other are still around and live on Oconto, Washington State, and Clintonville." His father died in 1934, aged 89.
--------------------
Oral tradition notes the Bartzs' were well to do in Prussia. Augusta refused to speak English upon her arrival in the States because she did not like the United States or living in the woods. Johanna, Wilhelm Bartz's wife did not like the situation any better. According to Clara Bartz, Augusta brought a cocoa set with her from Prussia, which was a very nice piece of china. Augusta snuck the set in her clothing because Fred told her she couldn't bring anything else. Clara Bartz said Augusta always talked of the nice items they had in Germany but never had in the United States.
--------------------
Frederick lived with Bertha and Bill Green at the their motel for several years after Augusta died. When they moved to Washington State Frederick lived with Clara and Horace. He was going to live with Mary and Oscar Strong, but their children were young.

Notes for Child: Bertha Augusta BARTZBERTHA GREENE SUCCUMBS AT 91
Bertha A. Greene, mother of Harry (Mick) Greene of North Bonneville, passed away Monday, April 13, 1970 at the Bonneville Sanitarium. She was 91 years of age.
Funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Gardner's Chapel in Stevenson with committal at the Carson Cememery. The Rev. Thomas Payton of the North Bonneville Community Church will officiate.

She was married to William Greene June 8, 1898 at Mountain. They first engaged in farming and later owned and operated a resort hotel in Lakewood, Wisconsin.
Mr. Greene passed away in 1946 in Wisconsin and Mrs. Bertha Greene and her son Mick and daughter-in-law Connie came to North Bonneville in 1953.
In addition to her son, Harry A. Greene, she is survived by a daughter Lillian Abraham of Hazel, South Dakota; two sisters Clara Herald of Oconto, Wisconsin and Lillian Minor of Georgetown, California; and one brother, Harry Bartz of Wilcox, Arizona. She also leaves eight grandchildren.
Mrs. Greene was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
